Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has opened up about his lifelong struggle with sickle cell disease, revealing that he still experiences health crises despite years of treatment.
Speaking in a recent chat with Nandoleaks, the 38-year-old singer got emotional as he reflected on how the illness shaped his early life.
“I still have crises,” he admitted, recalling how the journey began when he was just a child constantly falling ill.
He recounted nights of severe pain when his joints and stomach would ache so badly that his mother had to carry him on her back for miles to the hospital. That was when doctors diagnosed him with sickle cell anemia a discovery that changed his life forever.
“The doctor told me I would be taking folic acid and vitamin B complex for the rest of my life. That’s my reality till today,” he said.
Adekunle Gold also used the opportunity to educate Nigerians on the importance of genotype awareness before marriage, stressing that many cases of sickle cell could be avoided through proper testing.
“Sickle cell is very common in Nigeria. It happens when two people with SS genotype marry. That’s why knowing your genotype is very important to prevent more children from suffering,” he warned.
Despite the pain and limitations that come with the condition, Adekunle Gold expressed gratitude for life, noting that adulthood and access to better care have helped him manage the disease more effectively.
“I still have crises once in a while, but not as bad as when I was younger. I’ve learned to take better care of myself, and I thank God for the resources to do that,” he added.
His story serves as both a reminder and a message of hope that with awareness, proper care, and faith, sickle cell patients can still live fulfilling lives
