American music mogul, Sean “Diddy” Combs, will know his fate in court today, Friday as he faces sentencing following his conviction on prostitution-related charges.
Federal prosecutors are pressing for a heavy punishment, recommending at least 11 years and three months in prison. They argue that the former hip-hop star must be held accountable for his role in transporting women for prostitution.
But Diddy’s legal team is pushing back. His lawyers are asking Judge Arun Subramanian to hand down no more than 14 months in jail just a few months longer than the year he has already spent behind bars since his September 2024 arrest.
Legal experts, however, believe the final sentence may fall somewhere in between. Neama Rahmani, a former U.S. prosecutor, explained that since Combs was cleared of the more serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, the court may not go as far as the government demands.
“I don’t think he’s getting the 11 years that the government is recommending,” Rahmani told People. “Realistically, he’s looking at about four to five years, since that strikes a balance between what both sides are arguing.”
According to him, each prostitution-related charge carries a maximum of 10 years, while the probation office has already advised the court to consider a sentence of five to seven years.
Rahmani added that the judge’s earlier decision to keep Combs in detention, even after he was acquitted of racketeering and sex trafficking, shows that the court still considers him a serious offender.
“That tells me he’ll definitely serve time maybe not the full term prosecutors want, but something close to the middle ground,” he said.
Beyond the charges, the court may also take into account other damaging allegations that surfaced during trial, including testimonies about drugs, violence, and abusive behavior. While Combs was not convicted on those fronts, Rahmani noted that judges can still weigh such evidence when deciding on punishment.
Adding to the pressure, Diddy’s ex-girlfriend, singer Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, submitted a letter to the court ahead of the sentencing. Cassie, who previously accused him of physical and emotional abuse during their decade-long relationship, urged the judge to consider “the many lives that Sean Combs has upended with his abuse and control.”
For now, the world waits to see how Judge Subramanian will rule on one of the most high-profile cases involving a U.S. music star in recent years.
