Drama erupted on Thursday at the Federal High Court in Abuja after Justice James Omotosho ordered security operatives to forcefully escort IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, out of the courtroom.
The order followed Kanu’s persistent interruptions, insisting that the judge had no legal basis to stop him from filing a written address in the terrorism case brought against him by the Federal Government.
Kanu repeatedly demanded that the judge point out the section of the law that barred him from submitting the document, causing the court to temporarily halt proceedings.
Before the tension escalated, Justice Omotosho had delivered a ruling dismissing fresh motions filed by Kanu. The court held that the issues he raised were not new and had been previously ruled upon.
The judge also turned down Kanu’s request to refer the matter to the Court of Appeal, explaining that Section 306 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) prohibits the stay of proceedings in criminal trials. A renewed application for bail was equally rejected, with the court saying the concerns would be addressed during the final judgement.
However, just as the judge attempted to begin reading the judgement, Kanu again protested loudly, insisting the court lacked jurisdiction without first accepting his written address.
The disturbance prompted security personnel to remove him from the courtroom, allowing the court to proceed without further interruptions.
