Southeast Reps Urge Tinubu to Pardon Nnamdi Kanu

In a bold move for peace, federal lawmakers from the Southeast have called on President Tinubu to free Nnamdi Kanu, citing national unity.

The Federal lawmakers from the Southeast have stepped out to plead for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). They are calling on President Bola Tinubu to use his powers for the sake of national unity.

The appeal came after a crucial meeting of the South-East caucus in the House of Representatives this Monday. The lawmakers didn't mince words. They stated that the continuous detention of Kanu is more than a legal matter; it's a pressing national issue with deep human and economic costs.

The caucus painted a vivid picture of the situation back home. They spoke of the heavy burden felt across the Southeast—the fear, the closed markets, the interrupted school calendars, and the general tension that hangs in the air.

They argued that a political solution is the only way to ease this suffering and allow communities to breathe again and return to a dignified life.

"The situation has placed a deep emotional toll on our people," the lawmakers noted, highlighting the real-world impact beyond the courtrooms.

Their request is simple: they want President Tinubu to invoke Section 175 of the Nigerian Constitution to grant Kanu a presidential pardon. They described this power as a tool meant for moments like this—when the strict letter of the law is not enough to solve a complex national problem.

The lawmakers believe that a single act of clemency from the President would be a powerful symbol. It would show leadership that prioritizes healing over division and opens the door for genuine dialogue.

"We believe this would send a clear message that dialogue is still possible, even in difficult circumstances," the caucus stated. "It is an investment in Nigeria’s long-term peace."

This appeal places the ball firmly in President Tinubu's court, framing the release of Nnamdi Kanu not just as a regional concern, but as a vital step for the cohesion of the entire nation. The country now watches to see how the President will respond.
