A coordinated security operation in Edo State has led to the rescue of eleven travelers who were abducted by gunmen last week.
The incident occurred on the busy Benin-Akure highway near Obarenren village in Ovia North East Local Government. Reports indicate that armed men blocked the road, forced a vehicle to stop, and opened fire before taking eighteen passengers into the nearby bush.
The Edo State Police Command, through its spokesperson ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the development. She stated that a distress call was received immediately after the attack, prompting a swift mobilization of officers.
“We launched a bush-combing operation in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, local vigilantes, and hunters,” ASP Ikoedem told journalists. “This coordinated effort yielded results on Sunday with the successful rescue of eleven victims.”
She acknowledged that seven passengers remain in captivity. The police spokesperson assured the public that intense pressure is being maintained on the kidnappers to secure the release of the remaining individuals.
Ikoedem expressed confidence in the ongoing operation and urged communities to continue supporting security agencies with timely information.
The command remains committed to ensuring the safe return of all victims and improving safety on major highways.
