Wilfred Ndidi wearing the Super Eagles armband as new captain

Wilfred Ndidi will lead the Super Eagles after the Nigeria Football Federation confirmed him as captain following the international retirement of William Ekong.

The 28-year-old midfielder who now plays for Beşiktaş was handed the armband after Ekong announced his decision to step away from national duty on December 4.

Ndidi steps into the role as Nigeria prepares for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Rabat, Morocco.

The NFF’s announcement named Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi and Victor Osimhen as Ndidi’s deputy captains. Together they form the leadership core expected to guide the squad through the AFCON campaign.

Ndidi said he understands the weight of the job and will rely on the group to make the transition smooth.

“It’s a huge responsibility,” he told Super Eagles media. “With the help of the players everything will be smooth.”

He added that early conversations with teammates and staff have focused on unity and clarity about the task ahead.

“I have had conversations with a couple of the players to explain why we are here. I also need their support. The staff as well we are all in this together,” Ndidi said.

As captain, Ndidi inherits the role at a crucial time for Nigeria. The midfield anchor, known for his work rate and discipline, will be expected to marshal the team and set the tone on and off the pitch.

With experience from top European leagues and the backing of senior stars in attack and midfield, Ndidi begins a tenure that aims to marry strong leadership with collective effort and a clear plan for success in Rabat.
