Ahmed al Ahmed in hospital after Bondi Beach rescue receiving cheque

Ahmed al Ahmed, the man who rushed to disarm a shooter at a crowded Hanukkah gathering on Bondi Beach, has been handed more than $2.5 million raised by supporters around the world.

Ahmed, who was shot twice while confronting a suspected attacker, pulled more than 30 people to safety during the incident.

More than 43,000 donors responded to a GoFundMe appeal that drew contributions from public figures and everyday readers alike.

The cheque was presented at St George Hospital by Zachery Dereniowski, a Canadian influencer who helped organise the fundraiser.

Notable contributors included American investor Bill Ackman, comedian Amy Schumer, and Australian musician Charlton Howard, known professionally as The Kid Laroi.

When the cheque was placed in front of him, Ahmed looked up and asked, “I deserve it?” Dereniowski answered firmly: “Every penny.” The exchange underscored the gratitude pouring in for a man many now call a hero.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Ahmed kept the focus on the people he saved. He said he acted “from the heart” because it was a day when families were celebrating, and everyone deserved to be safe. He raised a fist and urged unity, telling those who praised him that standing together matters.

Ahmed’s message was plain and forceful: Australians and everyone touched by the story should refuse to stand by while violence happens. He closed with a prayer for protection and a rallying cry for unity.
