Operation Fasan Yamma Repels Zamfara Ambush, Troops Hold Ground

Operation Fasan Yamma troops conduct security operations after ambush in Zamfara State

Operation Fasan Yamma troops counter a deadly ambush in Zamfara after major anti-terror operations across the state.

Troops of Operation Fasan Yamma (OPFY) have repelled a terrorist ambush along the Bingi–Kekun Waje–Gusau Road in Zamfara State, following a series of coordinated security operations in the area.

The incident occurred on January 19, 2026, after days of sustained military action against armed groups operating across parts of the state.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of OPFY, Captain David Adewusi, and made available to journalists in Gusau.

According to the statement, troops under Sector 2 of Operation Fasan Yamma, working alongside the Mobile Strike Team and the Defence Intelligence Agency Tactical Support Team, carried out multiple raids, ambushes and patrols between January 17 and 19.

The operations covered Birnin Magaji and Anka local government areas, leading to the arrest of three suspects identified as Isiya Kwakwatawa, Ibrahim Dan Musulu, and Makau Lamba Goma.

The military said four terrorists were neutralised during the missions, while others escaped into surrounding forests.

Items recovered included a PKT machine gun, five AK-47 rifles, three magazines, 7.62mm ammunition, communication radios and three motorcycles.

While returning from the operations and responding to a distress call linked to a reprisal attack, troops of OPFY Combat Team 1 came under ambush at Gidan Wagni, along the route to Kekun Waje.

Despite the surprise attack, the troops engaged the assailants and prevented further threats to nearby communities. The military, however, confirmed the loss of five soldiers and one police officer during the encounter.

Following the attack, reinforcements were immediately deployed by the OPFY Mobile Strike Team, supported by the 1 Brigade Quick Reaction Force from forward operating bases in Kanoma and Kekun Waje.

The response was led by the Commander of 1 Brigade, highlighting the level of coordination within the operation.

The combined forces launched a counter-ambush that forced the attackers to retreat. Intelligence reports later indicated that two notorious bandit leaders, Janwuya and Alhaji Bello, a senior associate of Kachalla Soja, were seriously injured during the clash.

Some fleeing fighters were also believed to have sustained gunshot wounds.

Troops, working with community vigilantes, continued pursuit operations in the area, while further offensive actions remain ongoing.

Operation Fasan Yamma assured residents that the situation is under control and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives, securing communities and restoring peace across the joint operations zone.

The Theatre Commander also extended condolences over the losses and praised the troops for their courage, discipline and professionalism.

Members of the public were urged to remain calm and continue to support security efforts by providing timely and credible information.
