Former Senate President David Mark has hit back at the current Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, over the ongoing debate regarding the electronic transmission of election results.

David Mark, who now serves as the Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), insists that the leadership of the National Assembly should focus on its legislative duties rather than making excuses for the electoral umpire.

The disagreement follows recent comments by Akpabio, who defended the Senate's decision to reject a mandatory electronic result system. Godswill Akpabio had claimed that poor network coverage in at least nine states across Nigeria would make the process impossible.

However, speaking in Abuja, Mark argued that it is not the Senate's place to worry about the technical hurdles of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to Mark, the job of the National Assembly is to pass laws that reflect the will of the people. He noted that Nigerians have been very clear about their desire for electronic transmission to ensure transparency.

"What the ADC is saying is simple: pass the law for electronic transmission," Mark stated. He added that the decision on whether the technology will work should be left entirely to INEC.

He urged Akpabio to speak for the legislature and not for the commission. Mark pointed out that if INEC finds it difficult to implement the law due to network issues, it is their responsibility to address it, not the Senate's.

The former lawmaker concluded by reminding the current leadership that the public’s demand for modern, digital voting processes is a priority that cannot be ignored through secondary excuses.
