Governor Umaru Fintiri defects to the APC, taking his entire cabinet along to boost Adamawa’s development and unity.
The political landscape in Adamawa State shifted significantly today as Governor Umaru Fintiri officially moved from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
This move effectively ends months of whispers and speculation regarding his political next steps.
In a statewide broadcast on Friday, February 27, 2026, Fintiri announced that his decision was rooted in the need for national unity and the progress of Adamawa. He emphasized that the state’s growth is his biggest priority.
The Governor isn't moving alone. He is crossing over with his entire political machinery, including all cabinet members, political aides, and the chairmen of the 21 local government areas. This "all-in" move leaves the PDP structure in the state significantly thinned out.
Reflecting on his journey, Fintiri acknowledged the massive support he received from the people under the PDP in 2019 and 2023.
However, he noted that the current timing requires a closer alignment with the Federal Government to bring more dividends of democracy to his people.
According to Fintiri, joining the APC will allow Adamawa to fully tap into President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
He believes this partnership will fast-track major projects in housing, infrastructure, and social welfare for the citizens.
The Governor’s exit follows a major shakeup in the State House of Assembly just two days ago. On Wednesday, the Speaker, Bathiya Wesley, and 14 other lawmakers resigned from the PDP, citing the persistent internal crisis within the party's national leadership.
With the executive and the legislature now under the same umbrella, the APC has solidified its grip on Adamawa.
Fintiri has already called on his vast army of supporters across all 226 wards to register with the APC and prepare for a new political era.
This realignment is expected to have a ripple effect across the Northeast, changing the power dynamics as the nation looks toward future elections.
