Residents demand answers as the Lagos State budget reveals N135m spent on 20 office chairs amidst rising costs.
Questions are being asked about how the Lagos State government manages its finances. Recent findings show that the Office of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) spent a whopping N135 million on just 20 sets of office chairs and tables in 2025.
Despite this huge spending, the same office plans to spend another N40.5 million on the same furniture items in the 2026 budget. This discovery has sparked a fresh round of public criticism over how taxpayers' money is being used.
The spending spree does not end with office furniture. The state's 2026 budget also reveals that N55.4 billion has been set aside for the construction of permanent residential quarters for members of the House of Assembly.
A large chunk of this money, about N35.4 billion, is for the actual construction and consultancy fees.
Another N20 billion is earmarked for "beautification," which includes new fences, drainage, and landscaping at the lawmakers' quarters and the Assembly complex.
While billions are going into luxury housing for officials, community-based projects seem to be getting the shorter end of the stick.
Only N16 billion was budgeted for capital infrastructure interventions across various communities in the state.
This gap in spending priorities is even more obvious when compared to previous years. In 2025, records showed that N4.5 billion went into buying 40 backup generators for lawmakers, while N3.6 billion was spent on property acquisitions in Lagos and Abuja.
Critics are now pointing out that the state government is spending more on lawmakers’ comfort such as luxury cars and home renovations than on urgent public needs like erosion and flood control.
