Nigerian troops have successfully taken down a notorious Boko Haram commander, Abdullahi Mafa.

The operation, carried out by troops of Operation HADIN KAI in collaboration with local hunters and vigilantes, took place on Thursday.

The team caught the insurgents off guard during a tactical ambush along the Visik River line in the Madagali area.

According to security sources, the gun battle ended with the neutralisation of Mafa, a "hybrid" commander who has long been on the radar of security forces.

But the success didn't stop there. In a follow-up operation at the Madagali Motor Park, soldiers arrested a man suspected to be a key logistics middleman for the group.

The suspect, identified as Dauda Usman Gubula, is believed to be the person responsible for supplying the terrorists with high-tech equipment.

Security experts confirmed that two aerial drones and 20 solar power banks were recovered from Gubula at the time of his arrest.

These gadgets are often used by the insurgents for surveillance and to power their communication devices in remote hideouts.

Currently, the suspect is in military custody where he is being questioned. This latest breakthrough is part of an intensified push by the Nigerian military to dismantle the remaining networks of Boko Haram and ISWAP in the region.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and continue supporting the troops with timely information to help restore total peace to the North East.
