Boko Haram insurgents kill Lieutenant Colonel Umar Farouq in a fresh Borno attack as the military suffers heavy casualties.
The Nigerian Army has lost a senior officer in a fresh assault by Boko Haram. Lieutenant Colonel Umar Farouq, a Commanding Officer, was killed during a coordinated strike on a military base in Kukuwa, Borno State.
Security sources confirmed the sad development on Monday. The insurgents launched the attack on Sunday, overrunning the base and setting military vehicles on fire. They also carted away ammunition during the raid.
This tragedy comes as a heavy blow to the military. It occurs barely 72 hours after another top officer, Lieutenant Colonel SI Iliyasu, was killed in Konduga.
The back-to-back incidents highlight the growing intensity of the insurgency.
Reports indicate a disturbing pattern of violence in recent days. Between Thursday night and Friday morning, terrorists targeted four different bases. Locations in Konduga, Mainok, Jakana, and Marte town were all under fire.
Sources reveal that the attackers destroyed armoured tanks and stole weapons during these raids. It is estimated that over 40 soldiers have been recovered from the various clash sites. The situation in the North East remains tense as troops battle to regain control.
