Hollywood star Brad Pitt has filed a motion in a Los Angeles court to compel Russian businessman Yuri Shefler to sit for a remote deposition. The application marks a sharp escalation in the protracted legal warfare between the actor and his former wife, Angelina Jolie, over the ownership of the French winery, Chateau Miraval.
Pitt initiated the litigation against Jolie in 2022. He alleged that she disposed of her stake in the multi-million-dollar estate without obtaining his prior consent. The former couple purchased the property as a joint venture during their marriage, but negotiations for Pitt to buy out Jolie's interest reached an impasse following their divorce.
The dispute took a complex turn when Jolie sold her shares to the Stoli Group, a spirits conglomerate under Shefler’s control.
In fresh court submissions, Pitt’s legal team argued that Shefler was the primary architect of the transaction. They claim to have uncovered evidence of direct correspondence between Jolie and the Russian tycoon. These communications, Pitt insists, prove that Shefler possesses critical information relevant to the case.
Shefler has resisted the summons. He maintains that his residency in Switzerland shields him from the jurisdiction of a California court.
Pitt’s representatives remain undeterred. They contend that a remote deposition is a reasonable requirement given the evidence of Shefler’s direct involvement in the acquisition. The court must now decide if the Russian businessman is a central stakeholder who must answer to the law.
The outcome of this motion could significantly impact the control of the luxury estate. For now, the battle for Miraval remains a high-stakes standoff in the international business arena.
