A plot to ambush security forces backfired in Niger State, leaving eight bandits dead after their own explosive device detonated prematurely.
Eight suspected bandits have lost their lives in a botched operation after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) they planted detonated prematurely.
The incident occurred along Lukope Road in Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State. The device, intended for security forces, instead claimed the lives of the very insurgents who emplaced it.
The Incident
Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert, confirmed the details in a statement on Saturday. According to reports, the explosion took place around 8:30 p.m. on March 20 along the Kurebe–Kushaka axis.
This route is a known corridor for armed groups operating within the dense forest belt. Security sources indicated that the bandits were riding motorcycles when they inadvertently triggered the trap meant for advancing troops.
Loyalists of Dogo Gide
The victims are believed to be loyalists of the notorious bandit leader, Dogo Gide. They were reportedly heading towards the Lukope area when the explosion occurred.
Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma, Sector 1, responded swiftly to the scene, intensifying patrols to forestall further security breaches.
However, the incident has heightened tension in neighbouring communities, including Kushaka, Kurebe, and Gbato, where residents fear possible reprisal attacks.
Stakeholders have since called on relevant authorities to strengthen security presence in the area.
