2026 World Cup: Ghana Sack Coach Otto Addo

The Black Stars’ technical bench was overhauled on Tuesday as the GFA relieved Otto Addo of his duties following a 2-1 friendly defeat to Germany.

Otto Addo was relieved of his duties as the head coach of the Black Stars by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Tuesday. This decision was reached in the early hours of the morning, less than ninety days before the commencement of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A 2-1 friendly defeat to Germany at the MHP Arena in Stuttgart prompted the immediate exit of the tactician. The loss followed a dismal run of form for the West African giants. Four consecutive defeats were recorded by the senior national team, including a 5-1 thrashing by Austria last week.

The termination of the contract was confirmed through an official press statement. Sincere appreciation for the contribution of Addo was expressed by the GFA. However, a new technical direction for the senior men's national team was promised by the association in due course.

The leadership of the team was assumed by Addo in 2024. Only eight victories were secured during his 22-game tenure. This statistical return was deemed insufficient by football stakeholders in Accra as the pressure of the global tournament intensifies.

The Black Stars were drawn into Group L for the upcoming competition in North America. Challenges from Croatia, Panama, and England will be faced by the side. A search for a substantive successor has been commenced by the GFA to stabilize the squad before the opening fixtures.
