A Nigerian national receives a stiff 20-year prison sentence in India after being convicted for his role in a high-profile heroin trafficking operation.
A special court in Ahmedabad, India, has delivered a heavy blow to international drug trafficking. A Nigerian national and his Zambian accomplice have been handed a 20-year prison sentence for their involvement in smuggling narcotics.
The convicts, identified as 37-year-old Nwaobu Christian Arinze and Hanchabila John from Zambia, received their sentencing on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.
The court did not stop at jail time; both men were also ordered to pay a fine of 2 lakh Rupees each.
The arrests followed a successful operation by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) back in September 2021. Acting on credible intelligence, officers intercepted John at the Ahmedabad airport. He had just arrived on a flight from Dubai, concealing a significant stash of 2.75 kg of heroin.
During the investigation, the Zambian national revealed the name of his partner. The NCB discovered that Arinze was the intended receiver of the illegal cargo. This crucial lead resulted in the immediate arrest of the Nigerian national.
Following a complaint filed in early 2022, the case went through a detailed trial. The presiding judge found both men guilty under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
The judgment serves as a warning to others attempting to use India as a transit point for illegal drugs.
