Nigerian music icons Fela Kuti and Sade Adu have been honored with induction into the prestigious 2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The global music community is tipping its hat to Nigerian excellence once again. Late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and renowned singer Sade Adu have been inducted into the 2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The announcement was made on Monday night in the United States.
This recognition serves as a major statement for African music on the world stage. It comes just months after Fela posthumously received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is widely regarded as one of the highest honours in the industry.
Fela was inducted under the "Early Influence Award" category. This distinction is reserved for artists whose work laid the foundation for modern music. The Hall described him as a revolutionary who used music as a tool for political expression.
Sade Adu, famous for her timeless jazz and soul hits, entered under the "Performer" category. She joins a list of global stars including Phil Collins, Billy Idol, and Iron Maiden. Her unique sound has influenced generations of music lovers worldwide.
The induction ceremony is scheduled to hold on November 14 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. Fela joins other early influencers like Celia Cruz and Queen Latifah.
However, the road was closed for some other nominees. Global superstars like Mariah Carey, Shakira, and Lauryn Hill did not make the final cut this year. To qualify, artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years ago.
For Nigeria, this is a moment of pride. Fela is now the first Nigerian artist to be inducted into the prestigious Hall. It confirms that the country's creative exports continue to shape the narrative of global music history.
