Nigeria's ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, has died at 50 after a protracted illness in Turkey.
The federal government has confirmed the passing of Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele. He was 50 years old.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs broke the news in a statement released in Abuja on Wednesday, April 22. According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Lele died in the early hours of April 19 in Ankara, Türkiye. His death followed a prolonged illness.
Lele was a dedicated career diplomat. Before his latest appointment, he served as the Director overseeing the Middle East and Gulf Division at the foreign affairs ministry.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had recently nominated him for the top diplomatic post in Algeria. The Nigerian Senate officially confirmed his appointment before his sudden death.
Born in Gamawa, Bauchi State, in 1976, Lele built a strong resume in public service. He earned a degree in Economics from Bayero University, Kano. His diplomatic career took him across the world, with notable postings in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh.
The ministry remembered him as a highly intelligent officer who brought strategic insight to Nigeria’s foreign policy goals.
In accordance with Islamic rites, Lele was laid to rest on Wednesday in Kano. The federal government has sent its deepest condolences to his immediate family, his professional associates, and the government of Bauchi State.
