Abuja Barber Sues Police Over Eye Injury During Raid

Abuja barber Abraham Emmanuel sues Nigeria Police over eye injury during Bwari New Year raid

A barber based in Abuja has taken legal action against the Nigeria Police Force after allegedly losing sight in one eye during a police operation carried out on New Year’s Eve in Bwari.

The victim, identified as Abraham Emmanuel, is demanding ₦1 billion in compensation, claiming he suffered a severe eye injury after he was struck by a tear gas canister during the operation.

According to court documents, Emmanuel said the incident happened during a police raid in the Bwari area of Abuja while residents were preparing to celebrate the New Year.

He maintained that he was not involved in any criminal activity at the time of the operation and accused officers of using force recklessly during the exercise.

The lawsuit, now before the Federal High Court in Abuja, lists the Nigeria Police Force and a senior police officer among the defendants in the case.

Emmanuel is also asking the court to compel the police authorities to issue a public apology over the incident, which he said has permanently affected his life and ability to work.

Legal proceedings in the matter are expected to continue in September 2026 as both parties prepare to present their arguments before the court.

The outcome of the case could become another major test of police accountability and citizens’ rights in Nigeria’s justice system.
