Governor Bala Mohammed defects from PDP to APM, citing a deepening leadership crisis following a Supreme Court ruling.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party. He has now joined the Allied Peoples Movement.
The governor made this major announcement on Saturday. This came shortly after he met with political stakeholders to discuss the implications of the recent Supreme Court judgement on the PDP crisis.
Mohammed revealed that he spent eight days in Abuja trying to broker peace among party leaders. However, those efforts did not yield the desired results.
He explained that the Supreme Court ruling worsened the uncertainty within the party. The apex court had nullified the parallel conventions conducted by rival factions.
According to the governor, this judgement stripped the factions of their legal backing. It temporarily left the Board of Trustees to manage the party's affairs.
After wide consultations, it became clear that restoring stability in the PDP was a lost cause. However, the governor insisted his departure is not born out of anger.
He expressed gratitude to the PDP for giving him a platform for political growth over the years. He stressed that he remains PDP at heart but had to leave out of necessity to keep pushing for good governance.
Moving to the APM is a strategic decision for the governor. He noted that the new party offers political continuity and is free from the heavy legal battles currently dragging the PDP down.
To ensure a smooth transition, Mohammed disclosed that members of the State Executive Council seeking elective offices have stepped down. This was done to comply with the legal requirements for public office holders.
The governor also outlined the next steps for his new party. A compliance committee will be set up to manage the transition. Online membership registration will begin shortly, and the leadership will engage with the Independent National Electoral Commission.
He urged his supporters to remain calm and united, assuring them that this is a deliberate political repositioning.
At the welcoming event, the APM National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, formally received the governor and his supporters. He described the party as a democratic platform built on integrity, sacrifice, and service.
Dantalle boasted that the APM has no internal crisis and strictly follows its constitution. He also highlighted the party's recent councillorship victories as proof of its growing electoral strength.
To seal the defection, the chairman presented Mohammed with his membership card and party insignia. He noted that the APM symbol, the cassava plant, stands for resilience and economic value.
This defection marks a significant shift in Bauchi State politics. It also highlights the deep trouble the PDP faces as it struggles to resolve its ongoing leadership crisis.
