Erika Kirk commencement speech urges Hillsdale graduates to marry young, prioritizing family and purpose over mere career success.
Erika Kirk, the CEO of Turning Point USA, delivered a powerful commencement speech at Hillsdale College on Saturday. She had a very clear message for the graduates: think seriously about getting married young.
Speaking to a crowd of about 5,000 people, Kirk explained that building strong relationships early in life shapes everything that comes after. She pointed to her own life with her late husband, Charlie Kirk, as a prime example.
She shared that she and Charlie spent their time together discussing history, philosophy, and political figures. Kirk encouraged the students to do the same in their own relationships, building deep connections rather than superficial ones.
A major part of her speech focused heavily on marriage and family. She urged the graduates to prioritize settling down earlier rather than later, instead of just chasing career goals.
Echoing sentiments often associated with her late husband, she advised that the timing should be "not rushed, but young."
She also repeated one of Charlie's well-known phrases, telling the crowd he would say, "Have more children than you can afford."
Kirk reminded the students that life should not be driven only by personal comfort or success. It should be driven by purpose, discipline, and long-term commitment.
"If you want to make a difference in the world, it is very hard to do that when you look just like it," she told the attentive audience.
Her remarks also touched on patriotism. She asked the graduates to appreciate the United States, acknowledging that while it is not flawless, it is still the greatest nation. She ended that point with a simple, solemn plea: "Love her."
Inside the Margot V. Biermann Athletic Center, her words earned a well-deserved standing ovation. However, outside the campus, a small group of protesters gathered. They held signs criticizing Turning Point USA and Charlie Kirk's views on education and family.
During the ceremony, the college recognized Kirk and her late husband with honorary degrees in public service. Charlie Kirk passed away in 2025, and Erika has since stepped up to lead the organization as CEO.
Hillsdale College President Larry Arnn introduced her with warm personal stories. He recalled meeting Charlie as a teenager and getting to know Erika later on.
He even joked that Charlie had "outkicked his coverage" when he met her, a comment that drew loud laughs from the audience.
Kirk closed her speech by encouraging the graduates to build families, pursue truth, and live intentionally. For her, getting married young is not just a life choice, but a vital part of living a meaningful and purpose-driven life.
