A mother of three in the United States has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of her husband.
Kouri Richins, a writer from Utah, was convicted in March for the aggravated murder of her husband, Eric Richins. The sentencing hearing took place on what would have been Eric’s 44th birthday.
Judge Richard Mrazik delivered a stern ruling, declaring that the convicted woman posed too great a danger to society to ever be set free.
The court heard disturbing details about the events leading up to the tragedy at their home near Park City in 2022.
Prosecutors revealed that Richins laced her husband’s cocktail with a massive dose of fentanyl. Tests showed the drink contained five times the lethal amount of the drug. It was a calculated move driven by financial desperation and a desire for a new life.
According to reports, the defendant was facing serious money troubles linked to her house-flipping business. She allegedly sought access to her husband's assets, believing she would inherit an estate worth over $4 million.
The court also heard evidence of an affair and previous attempts to harm the victim. Investigators found that Richins had forged her husband’s signature on a life insurance policy just two months before his death.
She was also found guilty of attempted murder for poisoning his sandwich on Valentine’s Day.
Despite the overwhelming evidence, Richins maintained her innocence in court. She labeled the guilty verdict "an absolute lie" during her statement.
The case gained notoriety because Richins published a children’s book titled Are You With Me? after her husband’s death. The book, which tells the story of a boy coping with the loss of his father, was part of her public facade while she was under investigation. She was eventually arrested in 2023 while promoting the book.
