Tragedy has hit the family of young physiotherapist Mary Habila following her sudden death inside the Ebonyi home of the Minister of Works Senator David Umahi.
The incident which happened in Uburu Ohaozara Local Government Area has sparked nationwide attention with conflicting reports and fresh calls for a proper medical examination to establish what truly killed her.
According to reports Mary Habila and her colleague Anita Baski work with the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences in Uburu and had been seconded to the Federal Ministry of Works in Abuja for the past three years before the incident occurred.
Social media claims had alleged secrecy surrounding the death with some posts stating that the physiotherapist was found naked and unresponsive inside the minister's compound in his hometown.
Minister Umahi has strongly denied any cover up. Speaking on Sunday while inspecting the Ebonyi section of the Calabar Ebonyi Benue Nasarawa Abuja Super Highway he said his lawyers have been fully briefed to take legal action against those spreading false reports.
He explained that it was the family who became worried and forced open her door before calling doctors from the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital who tried to revive her without success. He added that the matter was immediately reported to the police in line with legal procedures.
What then is the cause of death. As of now there is no official medical confirmation. The minister said he had earlier advised the family to allow an autopsy to scientifically establish the cause of death but the recommendation was declined at the time.
He has again insisted that an autopsy must be conducted describing it as the most credible way to resolve all questions surrounding the incident. He urged the public to avoid speculation and allow investigators to do their work.
Police investigators are also insisting on the same position. Sources quoted by Sahara Reporters said operatives want the autopsy to be completed before the body is released and have challenged attempts to proceed with burial without scientific verification.
Amid this tension the family of the late physiotherapist has announced burial arrangements. The announcement made on July 14 2026 comes at a time when calls for a coroner's inquest and independent autopsy are growing louder.
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore is among those demanding a coroner's inquest before any burial is carried out to ensure transparency and protect the integrity of the investigation.
For many Nigerians following the story the key concern remains clear. What killed Mary Habila. Until an autopsy is conducted and results are made public the cause of death will remain unconfirmed.
Obgist News will continue to follow the police investigation the outcome of the proposed autopsy and the final burial programme as released by the family. Readers are advised to rely only on verified updates from the police and the family.
