At the global finale held at the Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, he competed against students from over 150 countries. He won gold in Mathematics in the Junior Secondary Category and also picked up silver in Science. His performance was part of Nigeria’s historic outing in Rome. The country won four gold medals in total at the competition. From Southeast Olympiad To World Champion Chimdiebube did not get to Rome by chance. He earned his spot through the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad. The regional contest was organized by education advocate and Educare CEO, Alex Onyia. It attracted over 11,500 participants from across the South-East. Onyia sponsored the entire trip for the top performers. He covered registration, visas, flights, accommodation and other expenses. He announced the victory on X via his handle @winexviv. “The wait is over. We have two golds: Chimdiebube Onwubiko and Don Anele Munachimso. We are the best in the world,” he wrote on July 7. Nigeria’s Golden Team Chimdiebube was in Rome alongside two other outstanding students. Eleven-year-old Onyedikachi Egejurum won gold in the Primary Mathematics category and emerged as the best primary school mathematician in the world. Seventeen-year-old Don Anele Munachimso won double gold. He was named world best in Mathematics and world best in Science in the Senior Secondary Category. He is also Nigeria’s current best in IGCSE Chemistry. According to Vanguard and Punch reports, all three students were products of Onyia’s Southeast Olympiad initiative. Sources within the Government House say plans are underway to formally receive and reward the gold medallist, similar to the scholarships and cash awards given to Enugu students who won the President’s National Debate Championship in Abuja.
