Enugu trains over 200 volunteers to guide runners and ensure world-class experience at Enugu City International Marathon
The Enugu State Government has concluded intensive training for more than 200 volunteers ahead of today's Enugu City International Marathon.
The exercise was organized in partnership with Nilayo Sports Management, the official technical partner for the race.
Training held on Wednesday at the iconic Michael Okpara Square in Enugu. It focused on building professionalism, etiquette and practical skills for race day support.
Officials said the goal is to deliver a marathon that meets global standards, with volunteers playing a central role.
Speaking during the session, Mr. Ebidowei Oweifie, Special Assistant on Special Duties to the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, briefed the volunteers on what is expected of them.
According to him, every volunteer needs to understand the rules guiding the marathon and their specific responsibilities during the race.
Oweifie described volunteers as the backbone of any successful sporting event. He noted that their behaviour, commitment and energy can shape the entire experience for athletes and spectators.
He charged them to stay enthusiastic from start to finish, cheering runners and offering encouragement along the route.
He also warned against distractions, stressing that volunteers must remain focused and professional at their duty posts.
The plan is to split the volunteers into different teams. Each team will be deployed to strategic points along the marathon route.
At their locations, they will guide runners, provide useful information, manage crowd flow and keep the morale of participants high.
Organisers say the training is part of a broader preparation to ensure the Enugu City International Marathon is seamless, safe and truly international.
With thousands of runners expected to compete today, Saturday, August 29, 2026, the trained volunteers will be key to crowd management and athlete support.
Members of the medical team were also present at the training. They include Mrs. Dominica Onyia-Okereke and Mrs. Portia Odo, who will be on standby to provide health support during the race.
