Anthropic has released Sonnet 5.5, the latest version of its mid-tier artificial intelligence model, which the company says works faster and at a significantly lower cost than its predecessor.
The company describes the model as an ideal assistant for everyday tasks, including coding and creating office documents.
Sonnet 5.5 is coming about three months after Sonnet 5 was announced. At the time, Anthropic presented Sonnet 5 as a model built for efficient agentic deployment, with the ability to run agents at a lower cost than competitors.
The major selling point for the new version is speed and efficiency. Anthropic claims Sonnet 5.5 is 30 per cent faster than Sonnet 5 and that its rate of token burn is significantly slower.
Speed and efficiency in focus
In Anthropic’s line-up, Sonnet sits below Opus in terms of raw power but can be more useful in certain situations because of its agility.
The company’s benchmarks show Sonnet 5.5 performing better than Opus 5.5 on agentic coding. Anthropic attributes this to its ability to spawn multiple agents without exceeding cost limits.
Anthropic also says the new model has significant cyber capabilities. The company claims Sonnet 5.5 has comparable cyber capabilities to Opus 5.
As a result, the company says Sonnet 5.5 is the first Sonnet model that will be subject to the same cyber safeguards that apply to Fable and Opus.
New Haiku model expected in coming weeks
Anthropic says it plans to release a new version of Haiku, its smallest model, in the coming weeks. It did not give a firm date for the release.
The launch comes amid a flurry of new model releases by major AI labs in the last year.
Just last week, OpenAI released a number of new models, including enhanced versions of Sol and Luna, its mid-tier and budget-friendly models. Meta also announced a new model which it said would power an upcoming feature linked to its smart glasses.
