Peter Obi vows to protect votes in 2027, says he is ready to die to stop rigging and IReV manipulation in Nigeria election.
PORT HARCOURT - Presidential hopeful Peter Obi says he will not watch his votes slip away again in 2027, even if it costs him his life.
The candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, made the vow in Port Harcourt on Thursday during a town hall meeting with voters.
The meeting, tagged "Obi Talks Nigeria", brought together supporters and undecided voters to discuss what lies ahead for the next general election. Obi used the floor to answer questions directly.
It was a strong statement from the former Anambra State Governor. He told the crowd that what happened in 2023 must not repeat itself.
Obi ran for president in 2023 on the platform of the Labour Party, LP. He finished third behind Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and eventual winner, President Bola Tinubu of the APC.
Since then, he and his team have insisted that the election was full of irregularities and rigging.
In Rivers State, he urged Nigerians to take charge at the polling units. He said plans are already in place to stop voter intimidation and suppression.
"Nobody will intimidate us again at the polling booth," Obi told the audience.
He broke it down in simple numbers. According to him, a polling unit usually has just five officials on duty. But the same unit has 40 to 50 voters.
"There is no way five people will intimidate 50 people," he said.
Obi said Nigerians must come together to rescue the country. He recalled how someone in the crowd said they were ready to die for the cause.
"This time all of us will rescue our country. Somebody said, 'We are ready to die.' Let me tell you, I'm ready to die too," he declared.
He added that the NDC will put a strong coordination system in place. The goal is to make sure every voter can vote freely without fear.
"We will make sure we have coordination to ensure that such intimidation does not arise," he assured.
The NDC candidate also raised alarm over the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and the INEC Result Viewing Portal, IReV.
He said some people may try to manipulate results through the IReV again. But this time, he said, it will be resisted.
"Yes, they will try to manipulate the IReV. But let me tell you, it will not be easy this time," Obi said.
Obgist reports that Obi revealed his team will deploy alternative technology to track results. The idea is to guarantee transparency from voting to collation.
"There will be so many IReVs this time. If there is a network glitch, we will give them another one that has no glitch," he explained.
He tied the glitches of the last election to the hardship Nigerians face today.
"By allowing them to continue, that glitch will glitch our lives. That is what we are suffering today," he added.
