The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested a man accused of parading himself as a lawyer and practising for over 11 years without legal qualification.
The suspect, Ugwumba Enyinnaya, was apprehended after police investigated a petition bordering on obtaining money by false pretence.
Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Joshua Ukandu, disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Tuesday.
According to the statement, Enyinnaya allegedly collected N650,000 from one Chukwu David in March 2026. The money was said to be for the processing and approval of a street naming in Ohaozara Local Government Area.
The petitioner told the police that the suspect presented himself as a lawyer with years of experience in legal practice.
Petition uncovered alleged impersonation
Ukandu said investigation commenced after the complaint was received, leading to the suspect's arrest.
He said findings showed that Enyinnaya had been operating as a legal practitioner despite not being qualified. The police added that during interrogation, the suspect admitted he was not a lawyer.
Exhibits recovered, suspect charged
A search conducted on his apartment led to the recovery of several items.
Police listed the exhibits to include a Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) seal, a portrait of the suspect dressed in barrister’s regalia, purported Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws degree certificates bearing the name of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, a barrister’s robe and wig, judgements said to have been procured from the court, and various legal documents allegedly prepared by him, including powers of attorney and deeds of conveyance.
The Command said the suspect has been charged to court.
Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, CP Hope Okafor, commended operatives who uncovered the case. She urged members of the public to always verify the credentials of persons offering legal services and to report suspicious activities to the police.
