IBBUL student death linked to rent dispute in Niger State

A 300-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), Niger State, has died in an incident authorities believe may be linked to a dispute over house rent.

The student, who was from Suleja, was living in an off-campus lodge where he also served as the caretaker. As part of his role, he was responsible for collecting rent from other occupants of the building.

According to local sources, problems began when the property owner requested payment of the rent. The student was reportedly unable to produce the money at the time, a situation that allegedly caused him serious emotional distress.

Some residents claimed the missing funds may have been lost through betting, although this detail has not been officially confirmed.

A handwritten note was said to have been found at the scene, prompting concerns about the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

Security agencies have since been informed and are expected to conduct a full investigation to establish what exactly happened and clarify all claims connected to the incident.

The tragic development has sparked renewed conversations about financial pressure, housing challenges, and mental well-being among students living off campus.
