After 73 days of refusing food, three activists from the Palestine Action group have finally ended their hunger strike.
The protesters Kamran Ahmed, Heba Muraisi, and Lewie Chiaramello resumed eating on Wednesday, January 14.
This follows a grueling period of detention while awaiting trial for their roles in demonstrations against Israeli-linked defense firms.
According to the campaign group Prisoners for Palestine, the strike was called off after the UK government reportedly met key demands. Central to these was the alleged denial of a £2 billion contract to Elbit Systems, an Israeli-based defense company.
The physical toll on the activists has been severe. Last week, 28-year-old Kamran Ahmed was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, with doctors warning he was at imminent risk of death.
Heba Muraisi, a lifeguard and florist of Yemeni heritage, shared a harrowing account of her experience.
Before the strike ended, she noted that she no longer felt hunger only intense physical pain though she remained mentally resolute about her cause.
The trio was part of a larger group of eight detainees held in connection to raids at Elbit Systems and RAF Brize Norton in 2024.
While four others had already begun re-feeding over the past month, one protester, Umer Khalid, reportedly remains on a hunger strike.
This standoff comes at a time of heightened legal tension. The UK government previously banned Palestine Action under terrorism legislation, a move that effectively criminalized membership. This decision is currently being challenged in the High Court.
Despite the legal battles and health scares, the activists remain defiant. Lewie Chiaramello described the end of the strike as a moment of "liberation," fueled by a desire to see a free Palestine.
While the hunger strike may have concluded for most, the campaign group insists that the "resistance" is only just beginning.
They maintain that the government’s attempt to suppress the movement has only strengthened their resolve to see arms firms driven out of Britain.
