INEC Announces New Dates for 2027 General Elections

Get ready for the 2027 general elections as INEC shifts the voting dates forward in a major schedule update.

Nigerians, take note. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released a fresh timetable for the upcoming 2027 general elections, moving the polls earlier than originally planned.

In a major update, the commission revealed that the Presidential and National Assembly elections will now take place on January 16, 2027. This is a significant shift from the previous date of February 20.

If you are looking forward to the Governorship and State House of Assembly contests, mark your calendars for February 6, 2027. These were originally slated for March 6.

Why the sudden change? It all comes down to the law. Following the repeal of the 2022 Electoral Act, the recently signed Electoral Act 2026 has come into full effect.

This new legal framework required INEC to review and adjust its entire roadmap to stay in line with the current rules.

The commission is urging all stakeholders, political parties, and voters to adjust their preparations to meet this new timeline.

With the dates now set in stone under the new law, the countdown to the next chapter of Nigeria’s democracy has officially moved into high gear.
