The greatest footballer of all time, Lionel Messi, has opened up about a personal struggle that has nothing to do with a ball at his feet.

Despite his trophy-laden career, the Argentine star says he deeply regrets not learning English during his younger years.

Speaking on the Miro de Atrás podcast, the Inter Miami captain shared how language barriers have left him feeling "half ignorant" during high-profile social gatherings.

He admitted that missing out on the chance to study the language as a boy was a major oversight.

The World Cup winner explained that while he had the time to learn, he simply didn’t take it seriously. Now, as a global icon living in the United States, he finds himself in rooms with incredible personalities but unable to engage in meaningful conversation.

"I always thought, 'What an idiot, how I wasted my time,'" Messi confessed. He noted that while young people often overlook the value of education, he is now making sure his children don't make the same mistake. He constantly reminds them of the importance of being prepared for the world.

Even though his football career took him to the pinnacle of global sports, Messi believes education remains a vital foundation.

He noted that his children are growing up in a very different environment than he did, and he wants them to maximize every opportunity.

Reflecting on his journey from Barcelona to Paris and now Miami, Messi acknowledged that football has been his greatest teacher.

He credited the sport with giving him strong values and lifelong bonds, even if he still wishes he could speak the world's most common language fluently.
