Youths and activists have gathered in Abuja under the banner “Occupy National Assembly” to protest the Senate’s decision to reject mandatory electronic transmission of election results.

The demonstration began at the Federal Secretariat. Protesters moved toward the National Assembly gate, carrying placards and chanting for a transparent voting process.

Organisers say the march responds to the Senate’s recent vote to remove a proposed change to Clause 60(3) of the Electoral Amendment Bill a clause that would have made real-time e-transmission of results compulsory.

Critics argue the decision weakens safeguards against result manipulation.

Security is tight. Police, soldiers and officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps are deployed around the National Assembly to manage the crowd and secure the area.

The public outcry has pushed the Senate into action: lawmakers scheduled an emergency plenary to address the controversy and the competing versions of the Electoral Amendment Bill passed by both chambers. Observers say the outcome could shape confidence in the 2027 elections.

For now, protesters remain at the Assembly perimeter pressing lawmakers to restore the e-transmission provision or offer a clear explanation to Nigerians. The situation is developing.
