Prof. James Ene-Nwannaji emerges as the NDC Enugu governorship candidate for 2027 after a peaceful and well-organized primary election.

Prof. James Ene-Nwannaji elected as NDC Enugu governorship candidate for 2027 election.

Professor James Ene-Nwannaji has secured the governorship ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

He clinched the party's ticket on Friday, defeating other strong contenders, including Chief Chinyeaka Ohaa and Senator Gilbert Nnaji.

Dr. Sebastine Okafor, the NDC Secretary in Enugu State, announced the results. He confirmed that the primary election took place across all 17 local government areas of the state. This, he noted, was in strict compliance with directives from the party’s national secretariat.

To ensure transparency, officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were on the ground to monitor the exercise.

The party also used the opportunity to announce winners for its three senatorial districts. Dr. Chika Obetta will fly the flag for Enugu North. Dr. Mrs. Celelia Ikechukwu secured the ticket for Enugu East, while Barr. Mrs. Ugochi Ohajekwe emerged victorious in Enugu West.

Several House of Representatives candidates were also revealed. Dr. Stephen Ugwoke picked the ticket for Nsukka/Igboeze South Federal Constituency. Barr. Chimezie Nwodo won in Nkanu East/West.

Others include Barr. Kene Nnadi for Enugu North/South, Comrade Felix Ijegalu for Udi/Ezeagu, and Barr. Onyebuchi Nwabueze for Igboetiti/Uzo-Uwani.

The party assured supporters that the remaining list of candidates for the House of Representatives and State House of Assembly would be released in due course.

Reacting to the outcome, the NDC Chairman in Enugu State, Dr. Johnpaul Ani, expressed satisfaction with the process. He described the primary election as peaceful and highly organized.

Ani stated that the entire exercise adhered to the party's guidelines and the Electoral Act 2026. For him, the smooth conduct is a clear sign that the NDC is fully prepared for the 2027 general elections.

He appealed to aspirants who lost out to accept the results in good faith. He urged them to join forces with the party to ensure victory in the governorship election scheduled for January 2027.
