Amazon cargo plane overshoots runway at Miami Airport, crashes into road and kills 5, injures 5 others in Sunday tragedy.
City Mayor Eileen Higgins confirmed the death toll from the Amazon cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport, five people have died and five others were injured in the accident.
According to officials, the aircraft overshot the runway and ran into a public road close to the airport, where it struck vehicles before coming to a halt.
The crash happened on Sunday. It involved an Amazon Air Boeing 767 that was arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Emergency dispatch audio obtained by TMZ revealed how bad the situation was from the start. In the audio, first responders confirmed at least one person was found dead under the right wing of the plane.
The same dispatch recording captured the panic at the scene. One responder was heard shouting, "Guys, the plane's on fire, plane's on fire, put your game faces on."
Videos from the crash site showed the jet badly scorched and surrounded by thick smoke and flames as fire crews battled to put out the fire and rescue victims.
Authorities say they are yet to officially identify all the victims. The investigation is still ongoing to determine exactly how many were on board and how many were in the vehicles that were hit.
Amazon has reacted to the tragedy. In a statement shared, the company said it is still gathering information and working closely with local officials. It added that its priority remains the safety and care of everyone affected.
Officials at Miami International Airport have not released a full report, but they confirmed that the runway overshoot led to the fatal collision on the nearby road.
