Nigerian troops killed several terrorist leaders after repelling coordinated midnight attacks across Borno State.
Nigerian troops from Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) successfully repelled coordinated attacks launched by insurgents across four locations in Borno State.
The heavy gunfights, which lasted for over five hours between Thursday night and Friday morning, took place around Konduga, Marte, Jakana, and Mainok.
The Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force, Lt. Col. Sanni Uba, confirmed that the desperate terrorists tried to overrun military bases starting around 10:30 pm. However, they met a wall of resistance from alert soldiers who refused to give up their positions.
The military responded with a heavy counter-attack, using reinforcement teams to outmanoeuvre the terrorists. In areas where the insurgents momentarily breached the perimeter, the troops fought back hard to regain total control.
During the exchange of fire, several high-ranking terrorist leaders, known as "Amirs," were killed alongside many of their fighters.
The Nigerian Air Force also joined the battle, launching precision air strikes on fleeing insurgents and their hideouts. These strikes dealt a massive blow to the group’s fighting strength.
While the military secured a significant victory, the victory came at a price. Lt. Col. Sanni revealed that some brave soldiers lost their lives during the intense battle.
Among the fallen was a gallant officer who was reportedly leading his men from the front when the attack happened. The military praised their sacrifice, noting that they died defending the nation and its people.
As of Friday morning, the military remains in firm control of all affected areas. Ground troops are currently combing the bushes to recover weapons, equipment, and the bodies of the neutralized terrorists.
This failed attempt by the insurgents is seen as a sign of desperation as they continue to face heavy pressure from the Nigerian Armed Forces across the North East.
