It was a day of quiet grief in Itchi, Igboeze South Local Government Area of Enugu State, as family, friends and political leaders gathered to bid farewell to former Senator Okey Ezea.

The late lawmaker, who represented Enugu North Senatorial Zone in the 10th Senate under the Labour Party, was laid to rest on Friday at his residence after a solemn funeral Mass.

Bishop Onah Describes Ezea as Fearless Voice

Delivering the homily, the Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Godfrey Onah, remembered Ezea as a courageous and selfless leader.

He said the late senator stood firmly for justice and equity, often speaking out for the people of Nsukka without fear.

According to the bishop, honouring leaders who served with integrity strengthens society’s moral foundation. He also praised Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, for approving a state burial in Ezea’s honour.

Governor Mbah: "A Patriot Who Lived for Service"

Governor Mbah, who led top government officials and dignitaries to the ceremony, described Ezea as a man who stayed true to his convictions until the end.

He said the former senator’s passing was not only a loss to his family and Enugu North but to the entire state.

“We have gathered to pray for the peaceful repose of our brother,” the governor said, adding that Ezea’s life was defined by impact rather than length of years.

Mbah recalled that Ezea first built a career in the Nigeria Customs Service before moving into private business and later politics. He noted that the late senator remained deeply committed to improving the welfare of his constituents.

The governor assured the family of government support, stressing that they were not alone in their grief.

Dignitaries Pay Last Respects

The funeral attracted mourners from across party lines and professional groups.

Among those present were Senate President Godswill Akpabio, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Senator Victor Umeh, who chaired the burial committee, and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe.

Speakers at the event described Ezea as principled, fearless and dedicated to the political and economic advancement of Enugu North and the Igbo nation.

In a vote of thanks, his first son, Jideofor Ezea, expressed appreciation to the governor, members of the Senate, the Church and all who supported the family during the burial.

A Life of Impact

Okey Ezea died on November 18, 2025, at the age of 62 after a brief illness.

His journey from public service in Customs to national politics, many said, reflected a lifelong commitment to service.

As Enugu State bids him farewell, tributes continue to highlight a legacy built on conviction, courage and a deep sense of responsibility to the people.
